Between the old vines you can see a section of this large leader where light is coming through. The large wound on this section of the tree created a large hazard.
Almost looks like an entire tree being removed in this picture.
With lots of room to work with the crane was able to remove large sections of the tree at a time.

This sprout is growing in the collection of decaying material in one of the main unions of the tree. This structurally important union would only continue to deteriorate as more decay happened.
Large wounds from poor pruning in the past were present throughout the tree.
With the last of the canopy gone, its just the trunk wood to go.

Unfortunately, the Hackberry tree in this backyard had several structural issues that made it a hazard beyond correcting. Below, you can see excerpts of the letter we provided to the Historic District Commission to get approval to remove the tree.
In many cases pruning and/or support systems, such as cabling, can go a long way towards reducing the risk a tree might present. In this case the extent of the decay, poor structure, and damaged leaders created a combination that left removal as the best option.
Good news! A replacement tree will be planted next planting season!
